The Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions was a labor union formed in 1881 by Samuel Gompers, a Dutch-Jewish cigar maker. It pursued the practical goals of shorter working days and higher wages, and openly supported strikes as a means to acquire these goals. The Central Labor Union and the International Working People's Association developed in response to the moderate stance taken by the Federation. |
