Carter Harrison was the popular mayor of Chicago at the time of the Haymarket rally. Harrison was sympathetic to the position of the unions and attended the Haymarket rally. He stood quietly, repeatedly lighting a match for his cigar. He explained that he wanted to ensure that he was seen, so as to put the attending crowd at ease. Harrison informed Police Captain Bonfield that the event did not require police intervention, and left before the bloodshed. |
