In 1867 Alfred Nobel, a Swedish inventor, patented the process to create dynamite, an explosive mixture of nitroglycerine and silica. Nobel invented dynamite for blasting use in construction projects. Johann Most, a German anarchist who moved to Chicago in 1882, wrote instructions for creating nitroglycerine and building bombs. Although no anarchist had thrown a bomb in Chicago before Haymarket, the leaders of the anarchist movement openly endorsed the potential of dynamite as a tool of terror. This "dynamite-talking" exaggerated the strength of the movement and stigmatized it as a violent one. |
