Daniel Cohn-Bendit
Bendit was born April 4, 1945, in Montaubanin in the south of France. His Jewish parents were forced to flee
Berlin in 1933 as a result of the National Socialists taking power. He spent his childhood in Paris, and in
1958 his mother returned to Germany with him. In the 1970's he co-founded the "Revolutionary Struggle"
("RK" are the German initials), a student group which attempted to work together with workers and
apprentices. Bendit participated in the squatter's movement and occupied houses with university students
and migrant workers to protest against the destructionof living space in Frankfurt, and helped shape
the culture of "housing cooperatives" as well. He also helped create the city magazine "Pflasterstrand".
In 1994 Bendit became a member of the European Parliament for the Greens and he is determined, as a European
"bastard"(as he likes to call himself), to defend the idea of Europe against any national exceptionalism
and also against all forms of regional favoritism.
