Anyone with an interest in the Second World War should  find in these War Cabinet Minutes fascinating glimpses into assumptions and expectations that guided the British war effort. The major events: the fall of France, Dunkirk,  Battle of Britain, Western Desert, Mediterranean, Burma and Far East campaigns including the fall of Singapore, the naval and air campaigns, the liberation of Europe and the final surrender of the Axis powers. The Home Front is also covered by the minutes. Those who remember the war years can also check with any of their suspicions as to what was really in the minds of the political leaders at that time as they dealt with the immediate threats and anticipated the future.

Viscount Wolseley was born in Co. Dublin in 1833 and joined the army in 1852. He served with distinction in the 2nd Burma War ( 1852-1853 ), the Crimean War  ( 1854-1856 ), the Indian Mutiny
 ( 1857-1859 ), the  China War ( 1860 ), Zulu War ( 1872 ). He also headed the expedition to relieve Gordon at Khartoum (1884-1885 ) and was Commander in Chief of the British Army between 1895 and 1899.
